Marisela Treviño Orta wrote Somewhere while she was working at Temple University as a playwright in residence. She was inspired by an article that discussed what would happen to the world if there were no more insects. With that in mind she sought to combine themes of immigration, Greek and Latin American mythology, western fairytales, science and social justice. It was then first directed at Temple University in January 2020 by Linsay Goss with Orta very closely involved in the production process.
