13 Friends
by Maria Irene Fornes
Directed & Adapted by Al Oltmanns
Assistant Directed by Grace Herman
While working as a faculty associate at the National High School Institute (a.k.a Cherubs) I assistant directed an adaption of Fefu and Her Friends. With a four-week rehearsal process, and 13 rising high school seniors, we staged and teched a 60-minute adaptation of Fornes's iconic piece.
Working on this piece taught me a lot about the tablework process and theatrical framing. It also helped refine my teaching skills and figure out ways to make a rehearsal room an educational-forward space. As the assistant director I helped give notes, keep the young actors engaged, and stepped in to run rehearsal when my director couldn't be there. Overall, I really enjoyed learning from a new style of directing and discovered a passion for working with young artists.
